Landscape design and working with plants have been my passion since I was a young girl growing up on a large farm in Brazil. I inherited my love of plants from my mother, who owns more than one thousand plants, grows her own food and runs a successful coffee plantation.
Stepping into Baja California Sur is like entering a botanical wonderland where evolution has sculpted some of the most bizarre and resilient plants on Earth. Unlike your average, leafy friends, these desert dwellers have mastered the art of survival in this arid playground. Take the iconic boojum tree, with its spindly limbs reaching for the sky like a surreal candelabra. Or the organ pipe cactus, standing tall and proud, channeling precious moisture down its fluted ribs. Even the seemingly unassuming cardón cactus boasts an underground root system that stretches for miles, tapping into hidden water sources.
But it's not just the cacti that steal the show. Endemic succulents like the Baja fairy duster adorn dry washes with their vibrant blooms, while elephant trees, with their swollen trunks, store life-giving water like giant desert reservoirs. Even the seemingly barren sand dunes teem with life, from the spiky skeleton milkweed to the curious "hole-in-the-sand" plant, its leaves perfectly adapted to trap precious morning dew.
As a landscape designer, I'm constantly awestruck by the ingenuity of these Baja plants. They're living sculptures, testaments to the power of adaptation, and a constant source of inspiration. Working with them is like collaborating with nature's finest architects, creating vibrant, sustainable landscapes that echo the unique beauty of this extraordinary desert.
